Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “Victoria R.,” one page, 13.75 x 9.5, December 23, 1857. The queen appoints John East Hunter Peyton "to be Ensign in Our Sixtieth Regiment of Foot." Signed in the upper left corner by Queen Victoria. The original paper seals are affixed to the left side of the document. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing and soiling.

John East Hunter Peyton (1841-1916) was a typical Victorian man with many pastimes, including an interest in geology and astronomy. After leaving the army in 1863, Peyton embarked on several projects including: joining the Royal Victoria Yacht Club; being elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1870; climbing the Jungfrau with the famous guide Peter Eggar in 1875; boring in the Sussex Weald for fossils; taking a Parisian balloon ride in 1879; climbing Mont Blanc; and sailing in the SS Garonne to Norway with Sir Norman Lockyer to photograph an eclipse of the sun.
