Historically significant pair of original 13.5 x 21.5 public military notice broadsides associated with Japanese internment, both issued by J. L. DeWitt of the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army, dated May 11, 1942. The first, headed "Instructions to All Persons of Japanese Ancestry," directs those living in certain sections of Los Angeles to evacuate by "12 o'clock noon, P.W.T., Sunday, May 17, 1942," and to assemble for transport to detention camps. It gives specific directions to families about what they could take with them—household and personal items limited to "that which can be carried by the individual or family group," and asks that the head of the family report to the Civil Control Station for further instruction, referring to "Civilian Exclusion Order No. 66."
Also includes the broadside announcing "Civilian Exclusion Order No. 66," ordering that "all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, be excluded from that portion of Military Area No. 1" or "be liable to criminal penalties...and subject to immediate apprehension and internment." Each broadside is double-matted and framed to an overall size of 24.5 x 32.5. In overall fine condition.
