DS, two pages, 8 x 10, August 24, 1981. Two pages of a legal document by which Spielberg certifies a petition to the State of California for an "Order Approving Contract of Minor to Render Acting Services in Accordance with California Civil Code Section 36(a) (2)." In part: "I am an officer of Extra-Terrestrial Productions, Inc., a party to this action and am authorized to make this verification for and on its behalf, and I make this verification for that reason." Signed at the conclusion of each page in blue ballpoint by Steven Spielberg, and countersigned once by his attorney. Double-matted and framed with a photo of Spielberg and E.T. (featuring the director's pre-printed facsimile signature) to an overall size of 34.5 x 21. In fine condition.
Starring child actors Henry Thomas (as Elliott) and Drew Barrymore (as Gertie), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was an immediate blockbuster hit on its release in 1982, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time (a record held until Spielberg's own Jurassic Park surpassed it in 1993). Principal photography began in neighborhoods in Los Angeles County and in the San Fernando Valley on September 8, 1981, using an unconventional shooting schedule—unlike most films, E.T. was shot in rough chronological order to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast. The children formed an emotional bond with the animatronic E.T. throughout filming, making their real 'goodbye' at the end more powerful. A fantastic pre-production document from one of Spielberg's greatest films.
