A presidential letter of condolence to the Queen of England

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 6, 1876. President Grant directs the Secretary of State to “affix the Seal of the United States to a letter of condolence addressed to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by U. S. Grant. Affixed by the left edge to a larger backing sheet and in fine condition. President Grant sent this letter of condolence in response to the death of Prince Harald, the infant son of Princess Helena, the third daughter and fifth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Harald was born on May 12, 1876, but tragically died just eight days later.
