Description

President Fillmore forwards a ceremonial letter to "Isabel II, Queen of Spain"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.25 x 10.25, December 24, 1852. President Fillmore directs the Secretary of State to “affix the Seal of the United States to a Letter of Ceremony, addressed to Isabel II, Queen of Spain.” Signed nicely at the conclusion by Millard Fillmore. In fine condition.

Although it's unknown to what “ceremony” this document refers, the year 1852 was very nearly the last for Isabella II of Spain, who was attacked and stabbed by an ordained priest when leaving the Chapel of the Royal Palace on February 2, 1852. Fortunately for the queen, the impact of the blow was reduced by the gold embroidery of her dress and by the baleen stays of her corset, resulting in a minor incision at the right side of her belly.
