Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15 x 13, October 24, 1860. President Buchanan appoints Antonio Jose da Silva as “Vice-Consul of Portugal, at New Orleans.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by James Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. The lower left is embossed with the official seal. In very good condition, with overall creasing and multiple intersecting folds. In 1860, New Orleans was one of the greatest ports in the world, with 33 different steamship lines and trade worth 500 million dollars passing through the city.
