Description

President Cleveland prepares for the arrival of his successor, William McKinley

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, February 24, 1897. President Cleveland directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my Proclamation convening the Senate of the United States on the fourth of March next.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.

The date mentioned above, March 4, 1897, marked the final day of Grover Cleveland’s American presidency and the very first of his successor, William McKinley. The first inauguration of William McKinley as the 25th president of the United States took place on that day in front of the Old Senate Chamber at the United States Capitol, Washington, D.C. This was the first inauguration to be recorded on film and the last presidential inauguration to take place in the 19th century.
