Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, November 11, 1889. President Harrison directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my Proclamation announcing the admission of the State of Washington into the Union.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Benjamin Harrison. In fine condition.
The state of Washington was formed from the western part of the Washington Territory, which was ceded by the British Empire in 1846, by the Oregon Treaty in the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute. An act of Congress during the creation of Washington Territory in 1853 named the state Washington, in honor of America’s first president, George Washington; Washington is the only U.S. state named after a president. It was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state on November 11, 1889, the very day Harrison signed this document.
