Description

"Part of it I read aloud to O’Keeffe" - Stieglitz on the latest issue of the influential NY quarterly, The Phoenix

ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, July 31, 1938. Addressed from Lake George, a boldly penned handwritten letter to writer Michael Fraenkel, in full: “No. 2 of The Phoenix arrived to-day. I suppose you are responsible for my getting it. I immediately read — + re-read — The Weather Paper. The re-reading should tell you how much I enjoyed what you have given the world. Part of it I read aloud to O’Keeffe. I still dare not talk much. I hope Margules told you how glad I was that he brought you to see me. We’ll surely meet again. I wonder is it still as difficult for you to accept this country of ours. My kindest greetings & again thanks.” In very good to fine condition, with some creasing and fold splits.

The Phoenix was a pacifist quarterly founded by James Cooney and his wife, Blanche Cooney, in 1938 at an artist's commune in Woodstock, New York. Inspired by a poem by D. H. Lawrence, The Phoenix was noteworthy for the willingness of its editors to publish material that the mainstream media would consider countercultural, radical, and revolutionary. The writing of Henry Miller, which could find no outlet elsewhere in the United States at the time, was featured in all of the initial issues, as were excerpts from the diaries of Anaïs Nin.
