In 1866, Buchanan published this book—the first-ever presidential memoir—through New York's D. Appleton and Company. In his typical lawyerly fashion, Buchanan offers a vigorous defense of his presidency in an attempt to rehabilitate his reputation after being blamed for failing to prevent the Civil War. A highly desirable signed book that kickstarted the tradition of the presidential memoir.
