Description

Three days before facing Joe Louis at Yankee Stadium, Schmeling renews his boxing license in New York

Partly-printed DS, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, June 19, 1938. State of New York Athletic Division license renewal application, for the "renewal of License as a Boxer." The document is filled out in type with Schmeling's country of origin ("Germany"), manager's name ("Joseph Jacobs"), and record during the term of his previous license, documenting wins in three fights against Harry Thomas, Ben Foord, and Steven Dudas. Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Max Schmeling. In fine condition. Accompanied by a vintage glossy 4 x 6 press photo of the boxer.

This historic document dates to just three days before Schmeling's storied rematch with Joe Louis, held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. In their first bout, held two years earlier, Schmeling won by knockout in the twelfth round. In the meantime, Schmeling won his three fights—though dreams of a title bout with heavyweight champ James J. Braddock fell through—while Louis won all eleven, including a knockout of Braddock to be crowned champion of the world. Louis, however, publicly announced that he refused to recognize himself as world champion until he defeated Schmeling. When he finally got his chance on June 22, 1938, Louis unleashed a powerful barrage and pummeled the German hero, beating him by a technical knockout in the first round. A significant document from the prelude to one of the most important boxing matches of the 20th century.
