Original 14 x 22 public military notice broadside announcing "Civilian Exclusion Order No. 41," issued in San Francisco by the Headquarters Western Defense Command and Fourth Army, May 5, 1942, ordering that “all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, be excluded from that portion of Military Area No. 1" or “be liable to criminal penalties...and subject to immediate apprehension and internment." The order was issued by Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt, who is best known for overseeing the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Rolled and in fine condition.
