Description

Magnificent oversized portrait of Winston Churchill—'The Roaring Lion'—signed by photographer Yousuf Karsh

Marvelous semi-glossy 16 x 20 silver gelatin portrait of Winston Churchill, famously known as 'The Roaring Lion,' taken by renowned portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh, affixed to a 16.5 x 20.5 mount, signed on the mount in black felt tip, "Karsh." Impressively matted and framed to an overall size of 26 x 30. In very fine condition.

Taken in 1941 after Prime Minister Churchill delivered his 'Some chicken, some neck' speech to the Canadian Parliament, this is one of the enduring images of the WWII leader: his defiant posture and expression embody the prevailing British wartime feeling of persistence in the face of an all-conquering enemy. Now remembered as one of the iconic portraits of the 20th century, it effectively launched Karsh's international career. Karsh later reflected on the image: 'My portrait of Winston Churchill changed my life. I knew after I had taken it that it was an important picture, but I could hardly have dreamed that it would become one of the most widely reproduced images in the history of photography.'
