An investment banker and philanthropist from Baltimore, Maryland, Garrett (1875-1961) made his mark at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 when he earned first place in the discus throw and the shot put, becoming the inaugural champion in those events. He also attained second place in the high jump and the long jump in Athens, and, four years later in Paris, he was awarded bronze medals for the shot put and standing triple jump.
