French composer (1818-1893) best remembered for his composition of 'Ave Maria.' ALS in French, signed “Ch. Gounod,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, May 11, [no year]. Handwritten letter, in part (translated): "I am so devoured and overwhelmed (one by people and the other by things) that I don't know how to get through what I have to do...I have to work like a horse, and I can't get anything done—So I can't afford the fried egg of friendship yet. I will try to take it the other Sunday:—But...Scotland, or maybe even the departure for France....what do I know?...We are like the bird on the branch, or....on the waters of the flood!" In very good to fine condition, with tape along the separated hinge, and a small missing corner tip.
