Ashkenazi Jewish painter and art collector (1847-1935) who was one of the leading proponents of Impressionism in Germany. His vast private art collection, which included notable works of the French Impressionists, was looted by the Nazi regime after his death. Original sketch by Max Liebermann of an old man seated in profile, his back supporting a large basket and his hands grasping a walking stick, accomplished in black ink on an off-white 6.5 x 4.5 sheet, which is signed in the lower right, “Berlin, 4/12, Max Liebermann.” The sketch is affixed to an off-white 9 x 7.25 sheet. In fine condition. This sketch closely mirrors Liebermann's 1896 oil painting 'In den Dünen [In the Dunes].'
