Belgian violin virtuoso, composer, and conductor (1858-1931) known as 'The King of the Violin.' ALS in French, signed “E. Ysaye,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, no date. Handwritten letter to M. Charlier, in part (translated): "It is beautiful...to dedicate oneself to the propagation of great music; but we must admit that we have here a supporting role with no ninth symphony to play. I believe that we are often the dessert or the sweet dish of the feast...The first time that I played a popular concert in Nantes, I made another departure from a principle that I had and still have, not to play without artistic remuneration. Today, you are still asking me for the same exemption and it is difficult for me to answer affirmatively." Ysaye specifies his price and the conditions which would allow him to accept the contract that is being offered to him. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing.
