American soldier and politician (1740–1809) who served as paymaster general in the Continental Army and as George Washington's aide-de-camp; he later served as governor of Connecticut and as the second Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jon'a Trumbull,” one page, 12.25 x 7.25, May 19, 1804. As governor of Connecticut, Trumbull appoints Joshua Porter “of said State…to be Judge of our County Court, to be holden within our County of Litchfield.” Signed at the conclusion by Governor Trumbull and countersigned by Secretary Samuel Wyllys. The left side retains the original ornate white paper seal. In fine condition, with a couple small edge tears and mounting remnants to reverse.
