Description

President Fillmore ratifies a 'Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation' with Borneo, an accord that remains in place to this day

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, February 1, 1853. President Fillmore directs the Secretary of State to “affix the Seal of the United States to a Full Power to exchange ratified copy of Convention between the U.S. and His Highness the Sultan of Borneo.” Signed nicely at the conclusion by Millard Fillmore. In fine condition, with some minor edge wear. This document relates to the Brunei-United States Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation, which was ratified a day earlier on January 31, 1853. The relationship between the United States and Brunei began when the USS Constitution dropped anchor in Brunei Bay on April 6, 1845, as part of the frigate’s epic world cruise. The treaty was officially signed five years later and is still in place today.
