Description

Career naval officer and admiral (1845-1929) in the Imperial Japanese Navy during Meiji-period Japan, who served as the first Commandant of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy. Rare 5 x 7.25 cabinet photo of Yoshika in his impressive military uniform, signed and inscribed on the reverse in Japanese characters (translated): “Presented to his Excellency Rear Admiral Fredericky Rawselsoo, Admiral Baron Inoue Yoshika, Shot in August 1901.” Published by Riyou Maruki of Tokyo. In fine condition.

Admiral Yoshika, who could not read or speak English, inscribed this photo to Admiral Frederick Rodgers, who at the time this photo was signed was in Japan as the top naval officer in the Pacific (Commander of the Asiatic Squadron). On July 14, 1901, Rodgers, who was the grandson of Matthew C. Perry, represented the U.S. at the dedication of his grandfather’s monument in Kurihama, Japan, to commemorate the Kanagawa Treaty of 1854, which was signed by Matthew C. Perry. This treaty initiated trade between Japan and the West.
