Description

Group lot of three items signed by Confederate Generals Lawrence O'Bryan Branch, Montgomery Dent Corse, and William Terry:

DS signed “L. O. B. Branch,” one page, 10.75 x 8, March 7, 1854, a stock certificate for 18 shares of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Company, signed by Lawrence O'Bryan Branch as president and William W. Vass as treasurer. Branch (1820-1862) graduated first in his class at Princeton in 1838, fought in the Seminole Wars, and was a U.S. Congressman when the Civil War began. As the senior brigadier general in Genl. A. P. Hill's Division (Stonewall Jackson's Corps), he saved General Robert E. Lee's right flank from defeat at the battle of Antietam. After the battle, while speaking with Generals Hill and Lee, he was shot through the head by a Union sharpshooter, killing him instantly. Branch is quite scarce in autograph form.

Ink signature of Montgomery Dent Corse, "Yours truly, M. D. Corse,” on an off-white 1.25 x 3 slip. Corse (1816-95) was a California 49’er gold miner and a CSA brigadier general in General Pickett’s Division.

Ink signature of William Terry, "Yours truly, Wm. Terry” on an off-white 1.5 x 4.25 slip. Terry (1827-97) was a CSA brigadier general wounded seven times (including a wound at Pickett’s Charge). Postwar he was a Virginia senator and Superintendent of the Virginia Penitentiary. In overall fine condition.
