Politician and diplomat (1792-1864) who served as Vice President under James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849; the city of Dallas, Texas, is said to be named for him. ALS signed “G. M. Dallas,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 22, 1844. Handwritten letter to Secretary of the Navy John Y. Mason, in full: "The friends of a very promising and spirited young gentleman, Tobias T. P. Devine, have requested me to present to you their earnest desire that he may obtain a warrant as a midshipman in the Navy. The youth is engaging, amiable, intelligent, and persevering, and looks forward with enthusiasm to the sea service. I directed him to furnish me with some testimonial from his teacher, and he brought in the enclosed. If it is possible, consistently with the arrangements of the Navy that young Devine should be allowed to enter it, I feel every confidence that he will do it credit." In very good to fine condition, with loss to the corner tips, and overall speckled foxing.
