Two items: a TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 6.75 x 9.25, personal letterhead, August 4, 1921, addressed from his summer home at Pointe-au-Pic and sent to O. H. Tripp, in full: “I have your letter of July Fourth, in which you ask that I send you a signed photograph of myself for your portrait gallery in your library. I shall be glad to do so when I return to Washington, if you will write me there after the first of October”; and a vintage matte-finish 7.75 x 10.25 Baker Art Gallery portrait photo of Taft, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, “For the Knox County Bar and Library Association with best wishes of Wm. H. Taft, Washington Oct. 22, 1921.” Both are framed together to an overall size of 16.5 x 12.25. In overall very good to fine condition, with some light creasing and foxing to the transmittal letter. Taft had become the 10th Chief Justice of the United States less than a month before sending the offered letter.
