Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 20.25 x 16.25, September 28, 1810. Four-language ship's papers issued to Samuel Wroe "master and commander of the Brig called the Tulip...lying at present in the port of New York bound for River La Plata and laden with Rum, furniture, Gin, fish, Boards & Plank.” Signed in the middle section by President James Madison, and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. The left side bears the original embossed and paper seals. In good to very good condition, with stains, tears, areas of paper loss, and splitting along the fragile intersecting folds; Madison's signature is clean and virtually unaffected by the flaws.

The Río de la Plata is the estuary formed by the confluence of the Uruguay River and the Paraná River at Punta Gorda. The name is also used to refer to the populations along the estuary, especially the main port cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, where Ríoplatense Spanish is spoken and tango culture developed. The coasts of the river are the most densely populated areas of Uruguay and Argentina.
