Description

Exceptionally rare invitation sent by John Lennon and Yoko Ono to BBC DJ John Peel to attend an exclusive world premiere of the ‘Bag One’ exhibition, which took place at the London Arts Gallery on 22 New Bond Street in London, England, on January 14, 1970. The cardstock invitation, 8.25 x 6.75, reads: “John & Yoko Ono Lennon and The Directors of London Arts Gallery invite you to the private view of the world premier exhibition of Bag One, Fourteen original signed lithographs.” The invitation includes its original gatefold glossy cardstock holder with “Bag One” printed on the front. In very fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.

The consignor notes that the items come from the estate of John Peel, former BBC disc jockey.

In 1969, as a wedding gift for Yoko, John drew the 'Bag One Portfolio'—a chronicle of their wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and their plea for world peace in the Bed-In. The following year the artwork was produced in a series of three hundred portfolios of fifteen signed prints each. The majority depict John and Yoko's most intimate, private moments—upon their first exhibition in London, more than half were deemed 'indecent' and confiscated by Scotland Yard. The non-erotic lithographs are scarcer than the erotics. The complete set of Bag One lithographs is on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
