Collection of PRN wardrobe department artifacts used to create Prince’s impressive ‘Glam Slam’ outfit from the Lovesexy era, which consisted of a light blue long-sleeve dress shirt and matching slacks, both of which were stylishly adorned with facsimile handwritten lyrics and images of female faces. Although designed for Prince, his one-time partner and ‘Pink Cashmere’ muse, Anna [Garcia] Fantastic, was also pictured wearing the outfit. The collection contains two screen print transfer frames and a group of 13 acetates with outfit text and designs; five of the acetates are accompanied by their unique garment patterns, all of which are specifically measured to Prince’s exact body dimensions.
The screen print transfer frames, 19.25″ x 24.25″ and 26″ x 26.5″, show partial female faces, words and phrases like “Slam,” “Transcend Physical,” and “New Power Soul,” and contain two lyrical passages from the Lovesexy song ‘Glam Slam’ — “This thing we got it’s alive! It seems 2” and “Sun is risen, moon is gone, Soda fizzin’ on the lawn, Come a butterfly straight on your skin, Glam Slam u really make my day, This thing we got - it’s alive!” Also included is a screen print test sample on an off-white 18.5 x 24 sheet, which features designs used for the shirt’s back. The 13 acetates, which range in size from 9.25 x 4.5 to 18.5 x 21, bear several sections of ‘Glam Slam’ lyrics in varying sizes of red and black font; and the garment patterns, measuring from 14 x 11 to 18 x 25.5, contain sundry handwritten tailoring notations.
From stage props to album covers, Prince held creative control across all elements of Paisley Park's day-to-day operations, which included the design of all of his stage-worn outfits. Prince oversaw the creation of the ‘Glam Slam’ outfit and personally selected several lyrical passages to be printed onto the fabric, making revisions as he continued to work out lyrics to the Lovesexy album. The presence of iconic logos, song titles, and popular phrases like ‘Thank you ma'am’ or ‘Transcend the Physical’ add a distinct and unmistakable Prince flavor.
