Printed form letter requesting the support of Claude Debussy in an effort to protect French architecture, signed twice at the conclusion by Debussy, once with his signature and then again in print, who also adds his address. The French-language form letter, one page, 4.5 x 5.75, no date, reads, in part (translated): “We would be very happy to have your support for the following petition that Mr. Maurice Barrès has just placed on the desk of the Chamber and which has already collected 450 signatures from artists and writers:
Mister President, Deeply moved by numerous recent destructions of humble churches, without style perhaps but full of charm and moving memories, of picturesque calvaries and old cemeteries, we come together, artists and writers of all beliefs, without distinction of parties, who found in these modest sanctuaries so much emotion and artistic sensation, to protest and ask Parliament that protection similar to that of historical monuments, picturesque sites and artistic reserves, be granted to them. We want to preserve these remains of the past, these sources of spiritual life; we want to safeguard the architectural physiognomy, the physical figure and morality of the Land of France.” The bottom portion features a list of signatories. In fine condition.
