Description

"I cannot promise you that it would inspire me to a poem or a play"

TLS, one page, 6.75 x 8, Faber and Faber Limited letterhead, May 24, 1950. Letter to Isaac A. Hedges of Washington University, in full: “Thank you for your kind letter of April 21st. I do not need any aid of memory to recall Ike Hedges who, I think, was a fairly frequent visitor to my father's house. I think I remember a tall, spare figure, but perhaps you are not as tall as you seemed to a person of my own small size. It was a pleasure to hear from you, and to have this information about Elijah P. Lovejoy. I have some of my grandfather's published writings, but I do not remember having anything about Lovejoy. I should be very happy to see it, though I cannot promise you that it would inspire me to a poem or a play.” Eliot adds the last two words in his own hand. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
