Description

Oversized signed Chaplin portrait from 1921, the same year he released The Kid

Marvelous oversized vintage 11 x 14 portrait photo of Charlie Chaplin by the Strauss-Peyton Studio of Kansas City, depicting the comedy pioneer posing in a handsome half-length pose in 1921, signed and inscribed in bold fountain pen, “To Jackie, from Charlie Chaplin.” The reverse bears the photography studio’s copyright stamp. In fine condition, with light rubbing to the photo surface, visible at an angle.

A spectacular oversized portrait of one of Hollywood’s original funnymen, elevated by its terrific size, great clarity, dark signature, and its important 1921 date, which marked the same year he released the silent era classic The Kid, Chaplin’s landmark first full-length film with complete creative control. That the photo is inscribed “To Jackie” is also quite appealing and coincidental; child actor Jackie Coogan played the title role of the orphaned ‘Kid’ that Chaplin’s Tramp character discovers and raises as his own.
