Description

"That is small change in relation to what I had to say" - Rand dismisses architecture as the basic theme of The Fountainhead

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, November 29, 1946. Letter to Karl Wieger, in full: “Thank you for your letter. Please excuse my delay in acknowledging it. The pressure of work has made it impossible for me to do it sooner. I am glad that you liked THE FOUNTAINHEAD. I am always interested to hear about it from architects. No, ‘the dithyrambs about skyscrapers’ is not ‘a reflection of megalomania.’ It is a reflection of the basic theme of the book, which, incidentally, is not architecture. That is why I didn't go into Roark's troubles with building codes or registration laws. That is small change in relation to what I had to say. I did cover the basic principles from which such troubles originate. I am enclosing a printed letter which you may find interesting.” The letter is affixed to the front pastedown of an early hardcover printing of The Fountainhead, published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943; the referenced “printed letter,” an eight-page pamphlet entitled “A Letter from Ayn Rand, Author of The Fountainhead,” which was previously affixed inside the book, is included. The letter is in very good to fine condition, with a few small stains, old tape along the top edge, and some show-through from the correspondent's letter on the back. Book condition: G/None, with a sunned and cocked spine, and scattered staining to boards and textblock.
