Austrian-born American film director and producer (1913-1994) who worked on such films as Two-Faced Woman, The Red Badge of Courage, and Town Without Pity. TLS signed “Gottfried,” one page, 8.25 x 11.25, June 12, 1973. Letter to Oscar-winning director George Cukor, in full: “I must apologize for the messiness of the exposé you asked for and I am enclosing. By the time you get this letter I'll be in New York (at the Alrae, 37 East 64 Street, RH 4-0200) and before departure I had no time to obtain a secretary. If you need the paper only as a reminder its form doesn't really matter. If you want to give it out it can't remain of course as it is. In that case, could you perhaps have it re-typed? I would appreciate it very much. In any event, I am most grateful for whatever effort you decide to make for the ‘cause.’ I know it's a worthy one, but I know also that it's somewhat of an imposition to encroach on a busy friend's time. Once again, many, many thanks and warmest regards.” Includes the referenced “exposé,” a two-page typed manuscript entitled “American Contribution to German and Austrian TV Testimonial for the Max Reinhardt Centennial.” In fine condition, with a paperclip impression to the top edge, and small stains to the right edge.
