British civil servant (1633-1703) best remembered as the author of a nine-year, multi-volume diary, one of the essential documents of 17th-century British history and literature. LS signed “Pepys,” one page, 7.75 x 11.75, February 13, 1668. Letter from the Navy Office, responding to an inquiry about a case of prejudice and directing the recipient to refer to "his Royall Highness's warrant." Signed at the conclusion by naval administrators Samuel Pepys, Sir John Mennes, and Col. Thomas Middleton. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining, and some trivial edge chipping.
