American soldier and politician (1737-1818) who rose to the rank of major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution but lost his command after a controversial retreat from Fort Ticonderoga. Revolutionary War-dated ALS signed “Ar. St. Clair,” one page, 7.5 x 12.5, September 11, 1776. Handwritten letter from "Tyconderoga" to Major General Philip Schuyler, in part: "I have taken the Liberty to enclose two Letters under this cover to you—I beg the favour of you to forward them by the first opportunity—I will not trouble you with the news of this Place as General Gates writes to you by this opportunity." In fine condition.
