ALS signed “C. D.,” one page on a 4.75 x 3 postcard imprinted "Mrs. C. Darwin" (with the "s" crossed out by Darwin), May 3, [1880]. Handwritten note to book publishers Williams and Norgate, in full: "Please to send me Ray Lankester's Lecture or Essay on Degeneration." Addressed on the reverse in Darwin's own hand, "Williams & Norgate, 14 Henrietta St., Covent Garden, London." In fine condition, with scattered light foxing and soiling. An invertebrate zoologist and evolutionary biologist, Lankester published 'Degeneration: A Chapter in Darwinism' in 1880, establishing him as a leader in the study of invertebrate life histories. A significant piece connecting two great scientific thinkers of the evolutionary era.
