Description

Rare handwritten land document from the original 'Maverick'

Texas lawyer, politician, land baron, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence (1803-1870) who was one of the last men to depart from the siege of the Alamo. His name is widely credited as the source of the term ‘maverick,’ first cited in 1867, which means ‘independently minded.’ Various accounts of the origins of the term held that Maverick came to be considered independently minded by his fellow ranchers because he refused to brand his cattle, though it might have instead reflected a lack of interest in ranching. Unbranded cattle that were not part of the herd came to be labeled ‘mavericks.’ ADS, signed twice as “Sam'l A. Maverick,” one page, 8 x 12.75, January 21, 1859. State of Texas, Bexar County handwritten document from Samuel Maverick, who writes: “Whereas Dr. Charles Ganahl has paid me the sum of nine hundred dollars...and given me his promissory note of this date for nine hundred and eleven dollars, as purchase money for Surveys No. 38 Sec. 2 Heirs of John Goodbread, No. 598 Sec. 2 Wright Alford and No. 599 Sec. 2 Heirs of Wm. Mackey the first on the Guadalupe River & the other two back of & adjoining, on Sun Flower Creek: therefore know ye that I, Sam’l A. Maverick am held and firmly bound unto said Ganahl in the sum of two thousand dollars, to the payment of which I find myself my heirs executors & administrators...The condition of this bond for title is that I will make or my heirs will make a good & sufficient Title Deed with warranty against the claim of all persons whomsoever for said three tracts, containing nine hundred & give acres upon the payment of said note...on doing which this shall become void otherwise remain in full force & effect.” Signed again at the conclusion by Maverick, and countersigned by surveyor Wilhelm Friedrich. In fine condition.
