Scarce book: An Antarctic Mystery by Jules Verne. First American edition. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1899. Hardcover bound in the publisher's original green pictorial cloth, 6.25 x 8, 336 pages. First published in France in 1897 as 'Le Sphinx des glaces,' An Antarctic Mystery is Verne's continuation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1838 novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Book condition: VG/None. Accompanied by a later London edition of Verne's Field of Ice, published by George Routledge and Sons [no year but circa late 19th century], in G+ condition with moderate edgewear. A nice pairing of Verne's polar tales in English translation.
