American statesman (1801-1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' Civil War-dated ALS signed “William H. Seward,” one page, 4.75 x 8, September 11, 1863. Handwritten letter to historian Benson J. Lossing, in full: "I thank you for your kind letter and for the patriotic efforts you are making to enlighten our countrymen upon the nature of the crisis at which the country has arrived. They will in due time understand and be grateful for them." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original Department of State transmittal envelope.
