Influential Norwegian painter and printmaker (1863-1944) celebrated for his intense and evocative treatment of psychological themes, best known for his iconic 'The Scream.' Twice-signed ALS in Norwegian, signed “Edv. Munch" and "E. Munch,” penned on an off-white 3.75 x 2.5 card, no date. A brief handwritten letter from the great artist, in full (translated): "With the honor to invite the composer Mr. O. Fried to the Opening (Vernissage) of the 'Efteraarsudstilling [Autumn Exhibition],' Venue 'Frie Udstilling.'" Munch adds "with ladies" to the lower left. Pencil notations to the reverse identify the recipient as the German conductor and composer Oskar Fried and that this letter was auctioned by Meyer and Ernst in February 1934. In fine condition.
Den Frie Udstilling ('The Free Exhibition') is a Danish artists' association, founded in 1891 by artists in protest against the admission requirements for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Denmark's oldest association of artists, Frie Udstilling is an independent artists' association and exhibition venue known for its openness to different artistic styles and movements.
Munch stayed in Denmark for several periods of time. For Munch, Copenhagen was a bridge to Europe, here he established contacts with Danish artists and poets. The artists associated with ‘Den Frie Udstilling’ such as J. F. Willumsen, Johan Rohde, and Paul Gauguin’s Danish wife, Mette Gauguin, welcomed Munch into their circle and became very important in introducing him to the art of Paul Gauguin.
