United States Army engineer and a Union general (1827-1900) who served as Ambrose Burnside's chief of staff in major engagements such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the Overland Campaign. Civil War-dated ALS in pencil, signed “Jno: G. Parke, Chief of Staff,” one page, 5 x 8, Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, December 16, 1862. Handwritten letter to Brig. Gen. James S. Wadsworth, in full: "The Comdg. Genl. wishes me to inform you that you can proceed to Washington, being summoned before the Court now in session." In fine condition, with a small hole to the lower blank area.
