Description

"As a Pennsylvanian I feel a deep interest in the Philadelphia Navy Yard"

ALS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, April 30, 1857. Handwritten letter to Hon. Henry M. Phillips, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In full: "I have this moment received yours of the 29th Instant. Your Telegraphic Dispatch was the first intimation I received that any change had been made in the Master Laborer of the Navy Yard at Philadelphia. Mr. Jones informs me that the recommendations were of such a character he thought there could be no mistake. The question will be suspended & both parties heard…You had a right to expect from our last conversation that no changes would be made until after the election. As a Pennsylvanian I feel a deep interest in the Philadelphia Navy Yard." In fine condition.
