Description

Prominent American politician (1782-1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8.25 x 10, December 23, 1814. Handwritten letter to Samuel H. Smith, in full: “I will comply with your request on the subject of naming of a suitable person for the place of assessor for the 4th collection district of S’o Carolina, as soon as I can get an answer to a letter which I have written in relation to it.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing, and some old fold repairs.
