Description

Handwritten letter by the 28-year-old "Buffalo Bill," early in his Wild West show career: "Our business here has been good"

Early ALS signed “Buffalo Bill,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Plankinton House letterhead, May 7, 1874. Handwritten letter to "Lieut. Albee," in part: "Well that was a thin headache but happy to say it did not prove fatal. I missed the train and had to remain until morning. How was that for a thin miss. Our business here has been good...I will send you my photo from Chicago. Will be glad to hear from you at any time and would like to meet you some time on the plains." In fine condition, with small edge splits to intersecting folds. Accompanied by an original cabinet photo of Buffalo Bill by Sarony of New York.

This letter dates to early in William F. Cody's career in show business: he made his debut in Chicago in December 1872, starring with his friend Texas Jack Omohundro in the Wild West show The Scouts of the Prairie. Cody founded the 'Buffalo Bill Combination' in 1874, performing for part of the year while scouting on the prairies the rest of the year. He wrote this letter from Milwaukee, where they performed from May 5-8, 1874; the Chicago run of their tour, as he mentions, took place from May 11-16.
