American music director (1792-1872) who was a leading figure in 19th-century American church music and is considered the first important U.S. music educator, credited widely with introducing music into American public schools. His best-known work includes arrangements for Joy to the World, Mary Had A Little Lamb, and the tune Bethany, which sets the hymn text Nearer, My God, to Thee. Scarce AMQS on an off-white 7 x 8.75 sheet, signed neatly in black ink, “Lowell Mason, May 8, 1857,” who above adds eight bars of music from an unknown piece of music. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
