Signed French and German-language book: Les Beatitudes, Score for Voice and Piano. Paris: Brandus. Custom-bound hardcover gilt titling to spine, 7.75 x 11, 308 pages. Signed and inscribed in French on the title page in fountain pen by Cesar Franck, who signs "Hommage de l'Auteur." In fine condition, with scattered light foxing to the signed page, and light wear to the covers.
Cesar Franck regarded his oratorio Les Beatitudes as his most important work. The first performance of the version with piano accompaniment was given in Franck’s private apartment, but the actual premiere of the orchestral version with over 250 performers took place only after the composer’s death in 1891 in Dijon. It was an overwhelming success, as was the Paris premiere in March 1893.
