Scottish nobleman, soldier, politician, and diplomat (1766-1841) known for his controversial acquisition of marble sculptures (commonly known as the 'Elgin Marbles') from the Parthenon in Athens; still housed in the British Museum, their rightful ownership remains a highly contested question of international art law and policy to this day. Lengthy ink closing and signature, "I have the honor to be, with the highest respect, Sir, Your Royal Highness, Most devoted, & obedient, humble servant, Elgin,” on an off-white 7.25 x 3 slip clipped from the close of a letter to "His Royal Highness, The Duke of York." In fine condition.
