Description

Author, explorer, and special correspondent for the New York Herald (1841-1904), most famous for his inquiry, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?,’ upon finding David Livingstone, a fellow explorer who had become lost in the wilds of Africa. Neat ink signature, "Dated at New York City, 4th Dec. 1886, Henry M. Stanley,” on an off-white 6 x 3.25 album page. In fine condition, with scattered light soiling and toning.

On November 21, 1886, the New York Times reported on Stanley's forthcoming visit: 'A reception will be given to Mr. Henry M. Stanley, Governor-General of the Congo Free State, on Monday, Nov. 27, by Mrs. A.B. Stone, at the Valencia, No. 150 West Fifty-ninth-street. The affair will undoubtedly be one of the leading social events of the season. Mr. Stanley is now on his way, to this city, having sailed from Southampton by the Aller on Friday last.'
