"How one wishes, before one wrote anything, that one knew everything!”

Influential English art critic and writer (1819-1900) remembered as a champion of the work of J.M.W. Turner. ALS signed “J. Ruskin,” one page, 4.5 x 7, Brantwood, Coniston, Lancashire letterhead, November 15 [no year]. Handwritten letter to an unknown recipient, in full: “I enclose a letter which you must have kindly wished me to read. I kept it with esteem, and am glad to be able to return it to you in better knowledge of the Free Church and its working. How one wishes, before one wrote anything, that one knew everything!” In very good to fine condition, with the recipient's name has been excised.
