Senior officer of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, who served with distinction in the battles of Stono Ferry and Eutaw Springs (c. 1733-1785). Manuscript DS, signed “J. Sumner Sher.,” one page, 7.25 x 6, August 11, 1772. Writ ordering Jethro Sumner, as sheriff of Bute County, North Carolina, to "take the body of Enoch Powell if he be found within our Bailiwick and him safely keep so that you have him before the Justices of our Inferior Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions at our next Court." Endorsed on the reverse by Sumner. In fine condition.
