Description

Sought-after first British edition of H. G. Wells's profoundly influential time-travel novel

Sought-after example of an iconic science fiction book: The Time Machine: An Invention by H. G. Wells. First UK edition, later issue (with one page of publisher's advertisements to rear of half-title, no inserted publisher's catalogue). London: William Heinemann, 1895. Hardcover bound in oatmeal gray buckram, lettered in purple on the front board and in blue on the spine with publisher's monogram on rear board, 4.75 x 7, 152 pages. Book condition: VG/None, with bumped lower corners and a minor stain to front board.

Wells's iconic story is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle or device—indeed, the titular 'time machine,' coined by Wells, is today universally used to refer to such a vehicle. Considered a cornerstone of science-fiction literature, The Time Machine has been praised as the progenitor of all time-traveling fiction and media.
