Description

Novelist, travel writer, and journalist (1908-1998), considered to be one of the greatest war correspondents of the 20th century. She was also the third wife of American novelist Ernest Hemingway, from 1940 to 1945. Fountain pen signature and inscription dating to two days before D-Day, "For Ernest Fred Manfred, with best wishes, Martha Gellhorn, London, June 4, 1944,” on an off-white 5 x 6.5 sheet of stationery from The Dorchester Hotel, London. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. One of the great WWII war correspondents, Gellhorn lacked official press credentials and hid in a hospital ship bathroom, impersonating a stretcher carrier, in order to witness the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. She was the only woman to land at Normandy, and later recalled: 'I followed the war wherever I could reach it.'

Gellhorn's husband, Ernest Hemingway, was famously photographed at the Dorchester during this period, having gone to England to cover World War II; he would also accompany the Allied troops in the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944.
